Searching aliens since 1999
I'm a big fan of the distributed computing project, Seti@Home. It stands for Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence at Home. Basically, it uses your unused CPU cycles (or processing power) and analyses radio signals from outer space collected at the Arecebo Space Telescope to look for any faint evidences of ET. You may remember the movie "Contact" by Judie Foster which explains everything.
I remember crunching numbers on my Power Macintosh G3/233Mhz which costed about RM 10k at that time. Equipped with a whopping 3 x 32MB RAM and a monster 4 GB hard disk, coupled with a 33.6k dial up modem and a gigantous 17" Apple CRT monitor with Mac OS 8.1 (its now Mac OS X 10.5), at 13 years old, just after starting to use a computer, I made my contribution to the society.
Sadly, the government funding is facing a threat. They're looking for more donors, so if you have spare cash, visit http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ . As I like to say (now), "pics or it didn't happen!" Haha...
