Creative Internet Advertising

For my Advertising subject, I need to write 2000 words about the Internet and advertising campaigns. We're talking IMC and stuff, less technical, more concepts and ideas.

*If you got an idea, e-mail me at pip@phailed.com

I chose Burger King's "Sacrifise a Friend for a Whopper" campaign on Facebook, comparing it to the static poster at kfc.com.my . No surprise to whose I regard as a better campaign. Problem is, HOW?

What do I need to cover?

Should I contrast and compare over traditional media like television, billboard, endorsements and newspapers? Is there any data that supports the idea that, "Hey, internet advertising works!".

One point Lukas pointed out is that, "Yes, you can create awareness. But how many of them converts into actual sales?". The Internet generation is a far more intelligent species than the people back then.

** This post is brought to you by SquareSpace, Netflix, GoDaddy, Revision 3 and the guys that brought the idea of Pedobear to Malaysia! **

Cost of advertising. My friend Yap told me an internet campaign will cost under RM 8,000 across 6 months. Billboard rental is close to RM 50,000 and a typical newspaper campaign, we're looking at RM 80,000 on the same time period.

Social networks are the buzz-word nowadays. They dish you targeted ads so the hit rate would be higher. Banner ads? E-mail advertorials? CHEAP, FAST, EFFICIENT, also F*KING annoying. Hackers and spammers are in high demand due to the advertising needs / lusts as a result of this attractive prospect.

Of course, if you're targeting the World War 2 veterans, senior citizens, you're better off with traditional media.

Barrack Obama is now the President of the United States of America, the most powerful office in the world, because of a good campaign, bolstered by their online team. In Malaysia, PKR garnered 5 states (and Kuala Lumpur) because politicians turn to blogs and Facebook.

How to make online advertisements less intrusive, well targeted, more catchy and more discreet? How can it help the food and breverage industry (fast food outlets in this place).

I thought of coupons. Well, getting it out there is easy but printing is a hassle.

Oh, wait a second. You can now access the internet through your mobile phone. NOW, that really widens the scope. Downloadable coupons! Bingo.

I think the technology is there to target ads to your phone based on location. Asia Cafe here in Subang Jaya tried it with their Bluetooth campaign. It was an epic phailure because nobody gives a rats ass. Only the tech geeks gave it a try; still they were unimpressed.

Innovative technologies must be employed correctly. Like my badminton coach always teases me, "Good idea, bad execution".

Internet connectivity must improve. Its nice to know Streamyx / TM is laying more pipes and increasing capacity to meet demands. Digi 3G is up and running, with up to 7.2mbps HSPDA connections. Wimax is starting to gain momentum although John Sam of Silent Scream doesn't fancy it.

I got a brilliant idea. If my crystal ball is right, around May this year, Apple will revamp the iPod Touch to double the capacity, making the 32GB cost only RM 1,200. Here's what an advertising company should do!

1. Subsidise the iPod touch device. Say, make it RM 799 a pop
2. Create a subscription service promising good deals and coupons. RM 25/month
3. Get McDonalds to give crazy promos, like free ice-cream and coke with any purchase. Get KFC to make Dinner plate rm 8 instead of the current rm 12 with this e-coupon, etc. etc.
4. Blast the device with Ads.

Get a designer to make a nice iPod Touch application with features like "online ordering", splitting the bill, location based restaurant recommendation, live bands performing where and when, arrange for celebrity meetups (like Mawi, Michelle Yeoh, you get the idea..) at certain eateries granting entry to ONLY users of this service.

Target the 20-40 years old segment. They have the most spending / disposable income power and they're all gullible for this sort of schemes.

Trusting what you see on the internet. You cannot expect people to trust you unless you have good media coverage. By media coverage, I mean through TRADITIONAL media. Meh.

Personally, I would go for "word of mouth", and viral marketing (nee. Samsung SSD, McLaren F1 / Blackberry). With the aid of YouTube, ads cost less to create and produce, turnaround time is significantly faster and it is very very effective in conveying a message.

Target 3 things: Social networking, Blogs of prominent people, and iPod touch

I got a friend who paid RM 3,000 for a mamak stall which promises 33% commission for every new member, paid in pre-paid food at outrages prices. Hey, some see opportunity in this. Most people fail to factor in the economic climate. Boo Hoo.

depends on budget

rm 500 and below, don't bother upgrading
rm 501 - ability to run java games, nice keypad
rm 700 - consider good 3.2mp camera
rm 1000 - wifi, 3g
rm 1500 - 2 device combo. get a cheap sub rm 300 phone, and an iPod touch (rm1.2k) - 16gb. or u can wait till May and get the new 32gb one.

its not worth buying anything over rm1k. srsly. depreciate like heck.
